Franz Schubert
Quintet in A major Opus 114
for Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass
THE TROUT
Movement 4 - Andante
|
Schubert composed the Trout Quintet at the age of 22 in 1819 and it is indeed a youthful piece, full of fun and joie de vivre. Schubert enjoyed walking in the countryside near Vienna through forests and alongside streams, where no doubt he got the inspiration for the story of the Trout. Originally one of his many songs, (he was reputed to have composed 7 in one day!) Schubert used the tune of Die Forelle (the Trout) to write his theme and variation movement, the fourth of five movements of the Quintet. The unusual combination of instruments gave the composer the means to produce a sound world of ripples and delight. This works well for the piano, which unusually never plays below middle 'C’, as it is relieved of the necessity of producing all the lowest notes with a double bass to do that instead.
Immediately a great success with audiences, it has continued to be so until the present day, with lots of beautiful tunes that sing away in one's head, no matter what the century.
CAVATINA and Wigmore Hall are presenting a joint Family Concert on November 8th 2008 at 2.30pm. The Kungsbacka Piano Trio (Malin Broman, violin; Jesper Svedborg, cello and Simon Crawford-Phillips, piano) are joined by Lawrence Power, viola and Graham Mitchell, double bass in a performance of this wonderful work. We also hope that Elizabeth Watts (who won the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Rosenblatt Recital Song Prize in 2007) will perform the song to introduce the Quintet.
Meanwhile, thanks to an even younger group of musicians, The Greenwich Piano Trio and Friends, all ticket holders for the Wigmore Hall concert and visitors to www.cavatina.net/NEWS can listen to and view the fourth movement of The Trout being played, right here and now. They can also search in YouTube for many different versions of 'The Trout' and have great fun deciding which one they like best. Do write and tell us your choice.
The Greenwich Piano Trio (Lana Trotovsek, violin, Stjepan Hauser, cello and Yoko Misumi, piano), winners of the 2006 CAVATINA Competition at Trinity College of Music, are playing with Felix Tanner. viola and Becky Welsh, double bass. Becky was formerly a student at TCM and Felix, is a member of the Brodowski Quartet, which holds the Bulldog Trinity Scholarship 2007/8.
